Prepositions with Time
Prepositions used with time expressions often cause problems. Here are some commonly used prepositions and situations in which they are used.
since + a point of time + present perfect
- e.g. He has lived in Australia since 2016. I haven’t seen him since Monday.
from + a point of time + simple past
- e.g. He lived in Ipswich from 2015 to 2018. He studied hard yesterday from 2:00 to 9:00 pm.
for + a period of time + present perfect
- e.g. He has lived in Australia for 2 years. I haven’t seen him for at least a week.
for + duration of time + present perfect
- e.g. I haven’t seen him for three days.
during + a period of time + simple past
- e.g. He lived in Australia during January 2017. I didn’t see him during all of 2018.
period of time + ago + simple past
- e.g. He visited Brisbane 3 months ago. Many years ago, he left Australia for Hong Kong and hasn’t returned since then.
